Free Tax Preparation

Free Tax Preparation Program (VITA)

What is it and who is it for?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides free tax help to people who make $62,000 or less and need assistance with preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers prepare the return and ensure all eligible tax credits are applied for.

Why is this a strategy for “increasing income”?

  1. Commercial tax preparation was identified as one of the high transactional costs of being poor. On average, fees to prepare and file a return are more than 10% of the refund amount received
  2. Prevent the use of check cashing services and refund anticipation products like RALs and RACs

How is the Snohomish County Asset Building Coalition providing this service?

United Way of Snohomish County hosts 6 VITA sites throughout county and many one-day outreach events to hard-to-reach populations like seniors. They also provide on-site financial education and resources/referrals to build financial assets and knowledge. United Way promotes and utilizes filing tax returns electronically and encourages the use of direct deposit to expedite refunds.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

What is it and who is it for?

An earnings supplement available through the income tax system that offsets payroll taxes and supports low- and moderate-income workers raising children.

Why is this a strategy for “increasing income”?

  1. The EITC delivers over $59.5 billion dollars a year in wage supplements to lower-income workers and their families and lifts more than 6.6 million people out of poverty each year.
  2. The IRS estimates 1 in 5 taxpayers who qualify for the EITC don’t claim it due to lack of knowledge.
